NFC, which is short for near-field communication, is a technology that allows devices like phones and smartwatches to exchange small bits of data with other devices and read NFC-equipped cards over relatively short distances. However, NFC can do a lot more than just handle mobile payments. If you've ever used Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, then you've already taken advantage of the NFC feature on your phone. Like many features of your smartphone, it quietly sits in the background until it's needed, but it can also be used to unlock a wide range of cool features that can make your life easier. Don’t worry, though, as the NFC chip in your phone is a passive scanner that does nothing until you hold it within a couple of inches of another NFC device or tag. The base app is free and offers basic features for all of its languages, but in order to get the lessons, offline dictionary, and live translation services, you have to pay $20 per month for a subscription. Another interesting feature of this app is that if a translation is not working or you still can’t understand its meaning, TripLingo will get you in touch with a live translator to help you out (for a fee). It offers the typical voice, image, and text translations, but also has four different slang levels for translations (formal versus informal), professionally recorded audio files, as well as a “culture crash course” to get you familiar with local customs and etiquette.
